Your Baby at Three Months

Your baby is 3 months old and is officially an infant and no longer a newborn! You are entering a new phase when babies tend to be mostly happy as long as they are fed and rested, and they become more playful and engaging. Three-month babies are also not mobile yet, which makes life a bit easier, for now.

Every baby develops at her own speed, but be on the look-out for some of the most common milestones once your baby hits that 3-month mark.


Remember all that tummy time you’ve been practicing with your baby? Well, it’s starting to pay off. Baby will most likely be able to lift her head up about 90 degrees when laying on her tummy. She will also start to be able to roll from tummy to back. (Rolling from back to tummy is a little tougher for babies and will come a bit later). 

Cooing and Laughing

Your baby will be starting to smile more and even laugh. There is nothing like the sound of a baby laughing! Baby will also be more vocal and begin practicing making sounds with her voice–often referred to as “cooing.” Talk to your baby, encourage conversation, use different tones of voice, sing songs, read books and tell stories–all of these things will help to boost development and strengthen your relationship with your baby. 

Increased Muscle Strength

Baby’s knees and hips are getting stronger, and by 3 months, your baby will likely bear weight on her legs when you hold her upright. Give her a couple more months, and she will want to bounce and jump with those little legs!


Your baby’s eyesight has improved by now and she can see objects farther away. You may notice her beginning to reach for things. This is a great time to introduce that playmat you got at your baby shower. Let baby kick and grab for the toys as they dangle above her. She may also like holding a toy in her hands–though her hands may be the more interesting thing to her right now!


You should not expect your 3-month-old to follow a strict schedule just yet, but introducing her to a routine is important and will eventually lead to healthier sleep habits. Find a routine that works for you and your baby. For example, bedtime might include a feed, bath, jammies, book and kiss goodnight. Also, now that your babe has reached that 3-month mark, encourage more awake feedings and less falling asleep at the breast or bottle. Helping babies to stay awake during feeds will not only result in better feeds and the ability for baby to wait longer before the next feed but will allow baby the necessary skills of falling asleep on her own and not with a feed.
