Try this if you have to hold your baby upright after each feed

If you’re a parent who finds themselves staying upright for 30 minutes after every single feed, this post is for you. I understand how challenging it is, especially in the middle of the night when all you want is a bit of rest. So, why exactly are you doing this? Let’s dive into some possible reasons and how to find a solution.

Why Are You Holding Your Baby Upright?

It’s not typical to have to keep your baby upright after feeding. Generally, this practice indicates an underlying issue with feeding. Common problems include:

  • Milk Transfer Issues: This means that the milk is not efficiently moving from the breast or bottle to your baby, perhaps because of positioning or technique.
  • Oral Restrictions: Conditions like tongue ties can affect a baby’s ability to suck effectively.
  • Oversupply of Milk: If you have too much milk, babies might take in air when they gulp to keep up with the flow, leading to discomfort.
  • Latch Problems: Ensuring a good latch can sometimes require adjustments for more efficient feeding.
  • Bottle Feeding Techniques: Sometimes the type of bottle or the way it’s offered can cause issues like gulping or swallowing air.

These are common problems and the solutions are definitely out there. Addressing these issues can make feeding time easier and alleviate the need to hold your baby upright for extended periods.

Get a Feeding Assessment

The most effective step you can take is to get a feeding assessment. A professional can help you identify the specific issue that requires addressing. Whether it’s a latch problem, an oversupply, or something else, they can provide personalized strategies to help smooth out your baby’s feeding difficulties.

Once you’re able to resolve the underlying issues, you should find that keeping your baby upright after feeds is no longer necessary. Imagine the freedom of being able to feed your baby and then put them down comfortably!
