This Mama Coach’s Nursery Must Have – Humidifier

This year has been AWFUL for colds and flus, and when you have a toddler in daycare, illness is nearly impossible to avoid. As a Registered Nurse who works with infants and children, moms always ask me how they can make being sick easier on their little ones. There are lots of RN approved tips and tricks, but one of my all-time faves is keeping a humidifier in the bedroom.

Whether you have a sick kiddo, or a brand-new baby, a humidifier should be on your must-have list.

Why you ask?

Babies have itty bitty airways which makes them prone to congestion. Young babies are also nose breathers. Small airways + having to breathe through their nose = a recipe for disaster if there are all stuffed up. Dry, cool air like we often have in Fort McMurray can mean that breathing is unnecessarily disturbed in your kiddo.

Clear noses are a necessity for sleep! As a sleep coach, I am well aware of how sleep can influence the overall health of an entire family. Finding good sleep when baby is sick can be a tough task, especially given that cold medications and decongestants aren’t recommended in children under 2. Thankfully, the moisture a humidifier provides helps to loosen up mucous, relieve cough, cold, and flu symptoms, nasal congestion, dry cough, sinus irritation, and nose bleeds.

Some humidifiers also offer a consistent, soothing hum, which has been shown to have positive effects on your little one’s sleep. Especially for young babies, these noises remind them of the comforts of their mother’s womb and drown out the household noises that may disrupt their slumber.

Prevent dry skin, and eczema flare ups! As a mom, we want to take the most conservative measures possible when preventing and treating dry skin or eczema. How does humidified air help? If the air is dry, it actually pulls moisture from our skin, leaving it prone to cracking, itching, and other discomforts of dehydration. Keeping air moist is one easy way to keep your little one’s skin moisturized, and keep them comfortable.

So what should you look for in a humidifier?

1. Something safe:

Humidifiers come in both warm mist or cool mist varieties. When choosing a humidifier for you little one’s room, safety should be #1. Warm mist humidifiers use hot steam to moisten the air, which leave a huge risk for burns if little hands accidentally come in contact with it. Cool mist humidifiers use high-frequency vibrations to produce an ultrafine water mist. Because there is no heat produced, you eliminate that burn risk all together. Finding one that has an auto shut off once the water tank is empty is also an important safety consideration.

2. Something easy to clean and maintain:

To prevent mineral, mold and bacteria build up, humidifiers need to be cleaned, and filters need to be changed. Since I’m all about making motherhood easier, cleaning and maintaining your humidifier should be no different. Choosing a filter-free, easy to clean option is definitely a must-have for this Mama!

3. One with a large tank capacity:

A humidifier that runs out of water half way through the night doesn’t do much good. Choose one that gets you 24 hours of continuous use to avoid unnecessary disruptions to comfort and sleep.
