One of the significant concerns for parents is their baby’s weight gain. It is entirely natural to worry about whether your baby is getting enough milk and gaining weight appropriately. However, it’s important to understand the dynamics of baby weight gain and how often you should actually weigh your child.

 

The First Few Months

During the first three months of life, babies typically gain about 30 grams per day. After reaching the four-month mark, this rate usually slows down to approximately 20 grams per day. But what do these numbers mean?

They do not mean that you need to weigh your baby every single day. There is a common tendency among parents to purchase scales out of concern for their baby’s weight gain. While it’s crucial to monitor your baby’s weight to ensure they are getting enough milk, it is equally essential to remember that these rates are averages.

Avoid Daily Weighing

Weight gain can vary from day to day. Some days, your baby may gain less, and other days, they might gain more. Over time, this will average out to the expected daily weight gain. Therefore, it is not necessary to weigh your baby daily or even weekly unless there is a specific reason to do so, such as a concern raised by your healthcare provider.

Weight gain is just one piece of the larger puzzle of your baby’s health. Your baby’s behavior can provide significant clues about their overall well-being, especially after the initial few weeks when the risk of jaundice has typically passed. Pay attention to the following signs:

  • Contentment Between Feeds: If your baby is usually content in between feeds, this is a good sign that they are getting enough milk.
  • Contentment at Breast or Bottle: Being happy while breastfeeding or bottle-feeding can indicate adequate milk transfer.
  • Wet and Dirty Diapers: Regular wet and dirty diapers are strong indicators that your baby is feeding well.

These behavioral cues are essential in understanding whether your baby is thriving, in addition to their weight gain.
