Do this to increase your milk supply
Breastfeeding can be a fulfilling experience, but sometimes new mothers worry about whether they are producing enough milk. If you’re feeling like your supply has dipped, there’s an underrated yet powerful technique you can incorporate into your routine: hand expression.
Â
Understanding Hand Expression
Hand expression is a simple method that can significantly impact your milk supply. It involves manually stimulating your breasts to encourage more milk production. This technique is particularly effective at the end of a breastfeeding session to ensure your breasts are emptied thoroughly.
How to Practice Hand Expression
After your baby has finished nursing from both sides, it’s time to use hand expression. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started:
Positioning: Place your hand a little way back from your areola, the darker area surrounding your nipple.
Movement: Gently press your fingers back towards your chest wall.
Expression: Squeeze while moving your hand forward, then release.
Repetition: Continue this motion for about five to ten minutes on each side.
Double Up: If you have a free hand, you can use both to double your expression impact.
360-Degree Approach: As you press and squeeze, make sure you work your way around the whole breast. This increases breast stimulation, further promoting milk production.
The Benefits of Hand Expression
Hand expression can aid in fully emptying your breasts, which sends a signal to your brain to produce more milk. It is a gentle way to boost supply without the need for additional equipment. Plus, one of the bonuses of this method is that you don’t have to clean pump parts afterward!
Give It a Try
If you’re on a journey to enhance your milk supply, consider incorporating hand expression into your breastfeeding routine. Remember, patience and consistency are key. By proactively using hand expression after nursing sessions, you can encourage your body to produce ample milk for your baby’s needs.
