Do this if you want your baby to sleep better

Getting your baby to sleep better can often feel like a monumental task. Whether you’re dealing with a newborn or an older infant, the struggle for better sleep is a common experience for many parents. In this blog post, I want to share one of my favorite tips that can help you and your baby achieve better, more restful nights.

 

Don’t Try to Do It All at Once

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is trying to tackle naps, nighttime, and bedtime all at once. The internet may tell you to go all in simultaneously, but this approach often leads to feeling overwhelmed and results in an overtired baby. Instead, try breaking things down and focusing on one aspect at a time.

Start with Bedtime

Bedtime is the golden ticket for better sleep. Whether you have a newborn, a four-month-old, or an eight-month-old, getting bedtime set can make a significant difference. Everything starts to fall into place once you establish a consistent bedtime routine. But remember, on night one, don’t stress about naps just yet. Let your baby nap on you.

Why Nap on You?

When your baby naps on you, they tend to sleep better. By preventing your baby from getting overtired during the day, you set them up for success when it comes to practicing new sleep skills at bedtime. It will go light years better if they aren’t overtired when it’s time to introduce these new routines.

Tips for Naps on the Go

Here are some ways to ensure your baby gets quality naps while you’re focused on perfecting bedtime:

  • Hold Them: Physical closeness can help your baby nap well.
  • Take Them for a Walk: The soothing motion of a stroller can work wonders.
  • Go for a Drive: Car rides can often help lull a baby to sleep.

The key is to make sure your baby is safe and that you are watching them. These “naps on the go” can be a beautiful way to set yourself up for bedtime success.

Always Focus on Bedtime First

Whether your baby is a newborn or ten months old, starting with bedtime when working on sleep routines makes a huge difference. Consistency in bedtime prepares your baby for better sleep overall and helps you as a parent to have a more restful night.
